MARION COUNTY BURIAL DATABASE:
This database, compiled and maintained by
Stephenie Flora
contains over 50,000 names. Inquiries are free. Requests should include
first name, last name and approx. time frame. Burial information for
female members of a family should include a maiden name if known. Many of the listings for these cemeteries are now available online at findagrave.com and interment.net
ASYLUM:
Established 1883
Located ".....just southeast of the Jason Lee Cemetery on D
street. In 1913 the cemetery was destroyed and all unclaimed
bodies
were cremated. The ashes were stored in the basement at the State
Hospital
until 1976 when they were placed in vaults in The Memorial Circle on the State Hospital grounds....." NOTE: The Oregon State Hospital is the custodian of the cremated remains of approximately 3,500 people who died while living at Oregon State Hospital, Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital, Mid-Columbia Hospital, Dammasch State Hospital, Oregon State Penitentiary, and Fairview Training Center between 1914 and the 1970s. These cremains were never claimed. The hospital hopes to change that and unite the cremains with family members. To that end, the hospital has posted this list of names of the people whose cremated remains are in its possession. Hospital officials urge anyone who thinks he or she may have a family member who passed away at one of these institutions to review the list. As soon as the connection can be confirmed, the hospital will make arrangements for the cremains to be sent to the family. A memorial has been planned for the cremains remaining in the custody of the Oregon State Hospital. For more information about the planned memorial for the cremains, please contact Patricia Feeny patricia.feeny@state.or.us or
